NZIA - Resene Local Award for Architecture – Juries comment:

This fitout was designed to create a strong “first impression”. It uses bold, gutsy forms and strong textured materials to good effect. The careful planning of the entrance thoroughfare at once reveals the different staff work spaces and affords them some separation from each other. The fitout is expressive, creates illusion of space and evokes curiosity through the complexity of its forms.

NZIA – Resene Colour Award – Juries comment:

This bold and expressive fitout plays with the textural qualities of aluminium tread plate and baby corrugated steel but its restrained use of primary colour applied in selected areas gives the space focus. Colour acts as a counterfoil to the metals and enlivens and accents the office.

From start, this Project was “unusual” and very challenging.
Mr. Robert Lendrums (client) Managing director in multidisciplinary company R.E.LENDRUMS & ASSOCIATES LTD made very simple and explicit brief about requirements:

• On approximate 400 m2 accommodate and provide functional working environment for 18 - 20 people • Made that new office “work” as “family under one roof” but with different open plan areas (architects, surveyors, engineers, storage space etc.)
• Provide big, adequate and very easy accessible storage space with lots of bench space & drawers for accommodate big planes, and plenty of open shelving space for files
• Provide two meeting rooms and reception/ waiting area
• Create very important “first impression” after entering in office
• Budget of app. $ 100,000.00 for all interior fitout and approximate 50 % for new furniture and equipment
• Improve existing air-conditioning and install new sound system
• Provide lots of display space (for architectural models particularly, on walls for photos, for different materials etc.)
• Easy accessible library
• Made working environment inspiring and easy changing

New landlord (Mr. Evans) – owner of the Building has his requirements too:

• Office fitout has to be with minimal budget (landlord will participate 30 % in total budget)
• Existing exterior of building has to remain
• Existing main entry door – has to remain on same position
• Existing carpet and suspended ceiling remain (only where is necessary replace)
• Office fitout, if required has to be easy disassemble


This Project from start to finish had unusual process. Preliminary design including scale model, was fully accepted without changes. I was asked “to start tomorrow work on site”. In first moment I did not believe, but next morning with model on empty floor of the new office, together with builders we started “constructive stage” of this exciting project.

You can imagine my responsibility and still desire to produce something new and original. I worked approximate 1-3 hours per day together with builders on site (trying to find the best solutions – aesthetic, functional and under budget). After four months office fitout was completed. For Upper Hutt it was something new and different.
People in office are happy with new working space same as new potential clients with very positive comment about interior.
